A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin is the fourth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series published in 2005. This book runs simultaneously with the next book in the series, A Dance With Dragons, and takes place in Westeros after the Red Wedding and the murder of Tywin and Joffery Lannister leaving Cersei to sit the Iron Throne.
Initially I was a little weary of this book because it did not include POVs from Daenerys or Jon Snow, whose journeys I typically found the most interesting. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the POVs we did have in this book; of course the return of Jamie Lannister, but also introducing POVs for Cersei and Brienne of Tarth.
This book, even without the main character of Daenerys, was really female-centric with Cersei and Brienne making up the most chapters throughout the whole book. Getting to see Brienne’s journey was satisfying, particularly since we had seen her a lot through the eyes of Catelyn and Jamie. Ceresi’s POVs really surprised me as well. She certainly is a villain but one that you love to hate and it was interesting to see how she reacted to her world crumbling around her
While this book definitely lacks the magic of most of the other series, I like it much better than A Clash of Kings which also took a more realistic approach. Perhaps I found the characters with the most POVs more interesting and felt like I already knew them in some sense in comparison to the second book.
Overall, A Feast for Crows is a book in the series that was unexpectedly high on my ranking list and a pleasant read.
