A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin is the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire Series that was published in 1996. The book is set in the fictional realm of Westeros and follows characters such as Ned Stark the Warden of the North, Tyrion Lannister the Imp and the last Targaryen; Daenerys as they fight for who they believe should sit on the Iron Throne to rule Westeros.

I first read this book in seventh grade (Which was honestly way too young even if I was at an advanced reading level) but it wasn’t until I re-read it the summer of 2024 that I really understood just how groundbreaking this book was. The world building itself was spectacular and I quickly became hooked on the sheer amount of history that Martin had made up for the world of Westeros and its people. I also became very invested in the female characters and specifically how they were written in a realistic setting that is often not true to most male writers.

The stand out POV to me was of course, Daenerys, and while I understand why some people are put off by her young age it is historically accurate that women of noble birth were often married in their young teens. Daenerys truly is the most magical character within the series and everyone knows how cool dragons are.

In my re-read I did find myself enjoying the character of Catelyn, the matriarch of House Stark, much more than I did initially. Even though I am not a mother myself, it is very apparent that the love of a mother for her children is what is driving everything that Catelyn does.

What I love most about all of these characters is how realistic they feel. They love and hate, they make stupid mistakes and face dire consequences. They feel three-dimensional and much more human than characters on a page and that is what makes people root for them.

A Game of Thrones is the perfect start to A Song of Ice and Fire series, which I believe to be one of, if not, the best fantasy series of all time.
