A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin is the third book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series that was published in 2000. This book continues on with the war of kings for the Iron Throne and showcases Daenerys’ growing strength in the East along with the growing threat of the winter beyond The Wall.
This is my favorite book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series and with good reason. This book is packed with action, battle after battle and some of the most well-known events within the series (along with the introduction of the famed quote “You know nothing Jon Snow”). This book in particular also cemented Jamie Lannister as my all-time favorite character within the series and furthered some more of the intriguing Westeros history.
Standout POVs in this book are the usuals Dany, Jon, Catelyn and of course Jamie. The character of Jamie was one I never expected to enjoy, much less become my favorite in the series. This book for the first time allows us to hear from Jamie what he has witnessed firsthand and how he thinks about himself in comparison to what we have heard from others about him. The unfolding of Jamie’s story really depicts him as neither a hero or a villain, but somewhere in the middle like the majority of most real people.
One thing I really wish we got to see in this book was a POV from Robb Stark. What we see most from him is from Catelyn’s, his mother, eyes and while she would know him very well I feel there was a lot that could have been included if he had his own POV. He was one of the warring kings and it would have been interesting to see him grapple with the death of his father, the supposed loss of his brothers, his “crowning” and the war all while he was still a young man.
A Storm of Swords is my absolute favorite book within the A Song of Ice and Fire series and I imagine it will stay that way whenever I decide to re-read the series next.
