Fire and Blood by George R.R. Martin is a fantasy book that details the rise of the Targaryen line and serves as a companion piece to his series A Song of Ice and Fire. Fire and Blood is an interesting addition to the series as it is written in the style of a textbook, omitting character’s personal thoughts, POVs and dialogue conversations.
I actually picked this book up before I read the whole series because I had heard it was a prequel of sorts. I found this book to actually be very interesting, while it took some time to get used to the textbook narrative style I found that I really enjoyed learning about Targaryen history in a way that those living in Westeros actually would.
The stand out section in this book is of course the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war between the Targaryens over who should sit the throne that led to the death of the last dragons in Westeros. I read this book before watching the HBO show, House of the Dragon, of which was based upon the book and I found it interesting to compare the two even if I am still without a doubt a member of Team Black and a supporter of the rightful heir, Queen Rhanerya.
Fire and Blood serves as a strong companion piece to the A Song of Fire and Ice series and provides excellent world building, although I do wish he would finish the series.
